Sandustry Liquid Gold Guide: How to Make, Move & Store It

This is a storage conversion, not a currency loss. Each Liquid Gold pixel keeps the total value of the Gold used to create it, so one Liquid Gold pixel is worth approximately twice as much as one solid Gold pixel. The liquid must still occupy Collector tiles before it appears in the player's bank and becomes spendable.

Liquid Gold is useful when the amount of solid Gold becomes harder to store. Its smaller pixel count holds the same overall value, but the change to a liquid also means the storage and transport layout must change.
How to make Liquid Gold
- Unlock the Smelter. The official Research page places it in Tier 5 at a cost of 3,000 Gold.
- Supply heat. The Smelter is fueled by heat from a Thermal Buffer or Lava.
- Feed Gold from above. The official Research description says the Smelter processes elements placed on top.
- Contain the liquid output. Liquid Gold is not launchable and will flow, so prepare a closed collection area before feeding a large batch.
- Test the value. Move the result into Collector tiles and confirm that the bank total reflects the converted Gold before scaling the line.
The current official sources do not publish a fixed Smelter speed or an exact whole-batch ratio. Treat 2 Gold → 1 Liquid Gold as an approximation and size the input buffer from observed throughput.
How to move Liquid Gold
Liquid Gold has two documented transport options:
- move a small amount manually with the Grabber, as with other compatible liquids;
- automate it with a Pump → Pipe → Liquid Vent network.
Place the Pump where Liquid Gold can occupy its central pickup area, connect it to the destination with a continuous Pipe, and use a Liquid Vent to deposit the liquid. Liquid Gold is not Lava, so it is compatible with the official fluid network.
Use a dedicated Pipe network for Liquid Gold. Connected Pumps and Vents share inputs and outputs; if more than one liquid enters the same network, the system distributes those liquids across its outputs rather than preserving a Gold-only destination.
How Collector counting works
Smelting does not automatically add Liquid Gold to the bank. Like solid Gold, Liquid Gold must be inside Collector tiles before its value appears on the HUD and becomes spendable.
Collector tiles are non-solid, so they do not act as a wall or floor. Build containment that keeps the liquid occupying the Collector area instead of expecting the Collector itself to hold it in place.
If Liquid Gold is visible but the bank total does not rise:
- confirm that the material is Liquid Gold rather than another liquid;
- check that the liquid pixels are inside the Collector tile area, not merely beside it;
- make sure the destination basin keeps those pixels from flowing straight through the non-solid Collector;
- compare the bank total before and after a small controlled transfer.
What Liquid Gold cannot do
The official material entry describes Liquid Gold as inert:
- it cannot be frozen;
- it cannot combine with other materials;
- it is not burnable;
- it is not wettable;
- it cannot be moved with a Launcher.
Do not build a production chain that depends on cooling Liquid Gold back into solid Gold or reacting it with another material. The documented purpose is compact Gold storage that retains research-currency value.

Is making Liquid Gold worth it?
Use Liquid Gold when compact currency storage is more valuable than keeping Gold on solid-material routes. The conversion preserves overall value and reduces the approximate number of stored pixels by half, but it adds a Smelter, heat, liquid containment, and fluid transport to the factory.
Keep solid Gold if it already moves cleanly into Collectors and space is not a bottleneck. Convert it when a dense Gold reserve is worth the additional liquid-handling cell.
Version and evidence note
