Is Sandustry Multiplayer? Vanilla Status and SandTogether Co-op Mod

Quick answer

Treat vanilla Sandustry as single-player unless the official store page or patch notes add multiplayer. If you want co-op today, SandTogether is a community Steam Workshop mod and should be tested with backups.

Quick answer

Sandustry should be treated as a single-player Early Access game in vanilla. The official Steam page lists Singleplayer among the current feature signals, so do not buy the base game expecting native online co-op or built-in shared-world multiplayer.

There is, however, a community Steam Workshop mod named SandTogether — Co-op Multiplayer. It advertises shared-world co-op for up to four players over internet or LAN. Treat that as modded multiplayer, not official vanilla support.

Does Sandustry have co-op?

Not as a confirmed vanilla feature in the current Early Access presentation. Players are actively requesting co-op because the factory-building loop would fit shared play, and the community has already started filling that gap with mods.

If you see a video, mod page, or old Demo post mentioning Sandustry co-op, check whether it is:

SandTogether co-op mod

SandTogether — Co-op Multiplayer is the main current community co-op signal. Its Workshop page describes one shared Sandustry world with the same sand, factory, and fluids streamed between players, with support for up to four players over the internet or LAN.

Use it carefully:

  1. Read the Workshop page before subscribing, including its one-time setup notes.
  2. Confirm that your Sandustry branch and mod-loading setup match the mod's current requirements.
  3. Make a save backup before testing multiplayer.
  4. Keep all players on the same Sandustry build and mod version.
  5. Expect desyncs or breakage after Early Access updates.

This is exciting, but it is still community infrastructure. If you want the most stable experience, keep a separate vanilla save and a separate modded co-op save.

Can you play Sandustry with friends?

For the vanilla Early Access game, plan around solo play. You can still share blueprints, screenshots, maps, and factory ideas with friends, but simultaneous shared-world play belongs in the modded bucket unless the official feature list changes.

With SandTogether, you can experiment with co-op through the Steam Workshop. Modded multiplayer carries different risks: compatibility issues, desync, save corruption, and version mismatch after updates.

Why co-op is requested

Sandustry's factories are physical, messy, and fun to debug. One player could mine, another could tune filters, and another could explore. That does not make multiplayer simple to implement, though. The game simulates large numbers of particles, terrain changes, machines, fluids, and reactions, which are exactly the systems that make synchronization difficult.

What to check before buying for co-op

  1. Open the official Steam page and check the feature list or product tags.
  2. Read the latest patch notes for any multiplayer announcement.
  3. Search the Steam discussions for developer responses, not only player requests.
  4. If using mods, confirm the mod supports the current Early Access build.
  5. Back up saves before testing any experimental co-op mod.
